Definition: Canonical URL (Part 4)

An HTML link element that tells search engines which URL is the master copy of a page, preventing duplicate content issues.

A Canonical URL (represented by <link rel="canonical">) points search engine crawlers to the primary, authoritative URL of a page. This consolidates link equity and solves duplicate content issues caused by HTTP/HTTPS or www/non-www domain variations.
